Obituary for Irene Gillespie (Jackson)

Irene Jackson Gillespie, age 98, of Lebanon, Va., departed this life to her heavenly home on Wednesday, May 9, 2018.
Irene was born October 28, 1919, in Skeegs, Va., the daughter of Alex P. and Matilda Jane Street Jackson. She was a graduate of the Triangle Mountain Institute, Mt. Heron, Va., in 1936.
She was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church, a lifelong homemaker, a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Joseph Earl Gillespie; a son, Stephen R. Gillespie; sisters, Mae Davis and Ruth Hale; brothers, Earl Jackson and Ellis Jackson.

Survivors include her daughter, Ava King and husband Don of Richmond, Va.; daughter-in-law, Claire Gillespie of Knoxville, Tenn.; sons, Joseph E. Gillespie, Jr. and wife Barbara of Lebanon, Va.; James A. Gillespie and wife Connie of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister Emma Gaye Murphy of Catlett, Va.; twelve grandchildren, Annette Lockhart, Abingdon, Va., Joseph Gillespie, Jacksonville, Fla., Jim Gillespie, Knoxville, Tenn., Sarah Hamilton, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wesley King, St. Augustine, Fla., Travis King, Warrenton, Va., Thomas King, Sandston, Va., Kassandra Gorbet, New Kent, Va., Paige Bridges, Marietta, Ga., Patrick Gillespie, Charlotte, N.C., Ginnie Chan, Knoxville, Tenn., Alex Gillespie, Knoxville, Tenn.; twenty great-grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Hummingbird Retirement Villa, Lebanon, Va., and Home Nursing Company, Inc. of Lebanon, Va. for their excellent care.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon, VA., with the Rev. Timothy S. Hankins officiating. Family members will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church, 24 Tate Avenue, Lebanon, VA 24266.
