Talmage Dotson (TJ)
Talmage Junior "TJ" Dotson, age 90, of Honaker, Virginia, passed away at home with family by his side on Tuesday, July 31, 2018. Talmage was born in Boone County, West Virginia, on April 1, 1928, to Thomas Jefferson and Opal (Berry) Dotson. He married Ora (Williams) Dotson, Logan, West Virginia, and they remained married for 57 years, until her passing in 2005.
Talmage was of the Pentecostal faith and was a lifelong coal miner. He started working in the mines at age 16, for Boone County Coal Corp, West Virginia. After moving to Virginia, he worked for Island Creek Coal Co. and Clinchfield Coal Co. He was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America and was working as a general mine foreman at his retirement from the mines.
An avid fisherman and hunter, he also enjoyed gun collecting and trading and playing poker with his friends. He was always "the life of the party". He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, enjoying activities such as allowing them to "rob" him at Christmas.
Talmage is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ora (Williams) Dotson; his parents, Thomas Jefferson and Opal (Berry) Dotson; step-mother, Hazel (Dunlap) Dotson, son, Talmage Dotson Jr.; son-in-law Lonnie Edward Thompson; grandsons, Lonnie Edward Thompson Jr. and Levi Stone Dotson; brothers, Camden Dotson, Basil Dotson, and Boody Dotson.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda J. Thompson Lockhart (Randal), Vansant, Virginia, and Sandra K. Thompson (Larry), Honaker, Virginia; son, Stanley D. Dotson, Honaker; sisters, Helen Baldwin, Oklahoma, and Carolyn Whipkey, Ohio; grandchildren, Vicki Thompson Swiney (Gregory), Clintwood, Virginia, Talmage Scott Thompson (Kendra), Bee, Virginia, Tammie Ora Thompson, Honaker, Misti R. Duty, Vansant, Larry Shawn Thompson, Honaker, Alexander L. Thompson, Wise Virginia, Tyler Dotson, Byron Dotson and Jacob Dotson, all of Australia; great-grandchildren, Talmage Scott Thompson Jr., Dylan Scott Thompson, Peyton Lee Brown, Eden Mikayla "Katie" Brown, Gregory Spencer Swiney, and Victoria Lonnie Jo Swiney.
Grandchildren and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at 7 p.m. in the Owens Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon.
